So the paperwork lady (Deb) from First Steps came over yesterday. She actually graduated from SBTS in 1992 from the education department. She didn't have to interact with Christian at all, but she arrived at the very end of lunch so the 4 of us just sat down at the table & talked.
We explained what's been going on & how we were referred to this service. Deb asked us lots of questions about what Christian can do & how we feel about his development. (Christian also showed her some things he can do.) We didn't hesitate to tell her we think he is too young to consider any sort of services at this time. She also told us that our pediatrician's office tends to refer kids to their service earlier than most other offices & even different doctors within our practice refer more/earlier than others.
Deb completely left it up to us whether or not to have a speech therapist come in at this time. Their speech evaluations are only done once every six months. She said Christian may not qualify for services at this time & then a couple of months from now when we may want their services we won't be able to do another evaluation. So, our plan is to see a different doctor at his 18 month check-up, see what they say & then maybe do an evaluation then. Deb, with a big smile on her face, told us we were doing a great job with Christian & agreed with our decision.
She also shared with us that First Steps works with kids under 3 & most of their clients are 2 yr old boys who aren't talking. Interesting. This may not be our last interaction with them. We'll see.
Other news: Christian will now only eat string cheese, Teddy Grahams, oatmeal (after some coaxing), waffles & Cheerios. Even though he's being offered other foods he's liked in the past. Yeh, meal time...not so much fun now. Toddler Joys.

Alex has been a great eater until a couple of weeks ago. He has started refusing some of the foods he used to love, like diced carrots that he loved when he got tired of pureed baby food. Now he just wants the pureed baby food. Weird. So I am feeling a little of that too, Abby. I hope everything works out fine with Christian's speech.
Andrew and Abby - let not your hearts be troubled. Stephen was referred to a speech therapist when he was four, and he's turned out fine. Some children are different, and Christian will be fine. He will talk when he wants to....
